The news for international tourists is getting worse and worse at the moment. Carbon emissions from aircraft are among the most harmful to our climate. At the same time, annual protests against tourism are gathering pace in the most popular destinations such as Barcelona and Venice. To top it all off, going abroad on vacation can be extremely stressful. Here are five ideas for taking a break from it all without setting foot on a plane.
1. Camping
You could always try to reconnect with nature by going camping. There’s no end of businesses selling equipment to meet the requirements of all campers, from newbies to experienced preppers. If you have kids, there are massive family tents to meet your space needs along with a whole host of accessories for everything from cooking to sanitation. There are also thousands of campsites for you to choose from. And if you really need your creature comforts, you could always try glamping instead.
2. River cruises
There are companies around that offer you the opportunity to hire a river-going boat, like a barge, and go on a cruise for a set number of days. These boats are rarely fast, but that’s all part of the relaxing appeal of this type of holiday. What better way is there to appreciate the natural beauty of your own country than by cruising down a river at a nice, leisurely pace? Most companies in this line will offer training in the safe operation of these boats too, so don’t worry if you’ve no experience.
3. Get on a train
It’s sad, but many people these days know less about their own countries than they know about others. Instead of ticking off the must-see destinations around the globe, why not book a train ticket for somewhere in your own country that you’ve never been to before? Every city and destination—big or small, near or far—offers surprises for tourists. You are bound to see or learn something new. Trains are the greener option here, but you could also go by coach or drive.
4. Explore your own city
Running with the same idea as above, how well do you truly know your own town or city? Could you relate its history to a traveler? Tell them about all the interesting sights and best places to hang out? If your answer is no, then why not learn? Take a week off work and book a place on a few guided tours, or go exploring yourself. If you have kids, bring them.
5. Don’t go anywhere
And finally, do you really need to go anywhere at all? A vacation doesn’t have to involve traveling. If you have a busy working life and find it hard to relax, a week or two off could be spent trying to do just that. Why not catch up on books you want to read or those series you miss because you’re so busy? If you struggle to find time to spend with your kids, now is your chance.
