Just like every other product on the market, once customers have grown fond of a brand, they will stick to that brand for a long time. It’s not unusual for customers to come into a store and grab their favorite Snickers bar or Toblerone and promptly ignore all the other candy bars on the shelves.
I get it, these established brands work, and they are consistent with their quality. But there are candies out there that have been shoved to the background for quite a while, doing their thing to stay in the market. They may not be the best candies, but it doesn’t hurt to give them a try sometimes. Who knows? You may end up finding your next favorite sweet treat after a few experiments.
Today, we will look at some of the most underrated candies in the U.S.
1. The Abba-Zabba
Abba-Zabba has a long history, dating back to 1922 when they were invented by the Annabelle Candy Company. The candy bar has a very distinctive looking and coloring scheme, making it stand out among the crowd. However, it’s not as eye-catchy as other candy on the market. If you ever have the chance, make sure to grab one of these and try them out. They are sweet, chewy and especially sticky due to the white taffy coating.
2. The Charleston Chew
The Charleston Chew is named after the Charleston dancing that came from Charleston city, South Carolina in the early 1900s. The bar is a mix of sugar, honey, and nuts of various types, coated with chocolate. There are many flavors that you can choose, from the standard vanilla and chocolate to strawberry flavors. If you want to increase the crunchiness of the candy, try to have them while they are frozen. You’ll be surprised by how good they are.
3. PayDay
If you like peanuts, you will like PayDay. It is perhaps the candy bar with the most peanuts in it across the entire United States. On the inside, you will find the sweet and flavorful caramelized nougat while on the outside, you will find a lot of salted peanuts. The candy manages to strike a perfect balance between salty and sweet, making it the perfect peanut bar for any candy lover. If you are after a crispy experience and you love peanut, make sure to grab one of these from your local candy store during your next visit.
4. The Whatchamacallit
Whatchamacallit doesn’t get as much attention as Hershey’s other famous product, probably because its name is so hard to pronounce and remember. But don’t let the name intimidate you. It’s just a candy bar, like any other candy bar that you find in the supermarket. Despite the name, it’s a delicious candy. With crispy rice and peanut butter mixed together into a perfect caramelized blend, it’s sweet and crispy before you even count the chocolate coating. While it’s not advertised a lot nowadays, it is still in production and is present at most candy stores.
