5 Foods You Should Be Eating

In today’s fast-paced world it can be easy to forget the simple things we can do for our health, like eating well. Too often, advice on how to improve health focuses on exercise at the expense of making some sensible and easy dietary changes. With that in mind, here’s a list of five foods you should be eating.

1. Avocados

Avocados have experienced something of a boom in popularity in recent years, and with good cause. The fruit of the avocado tree is exceptionally nutritious and rich in vitamins B and K, while also containing healthy amounts of vitamins C and E. A typical avocado also has more potassium than a banana. In terms of preparation, they are also incredibly versatile and can be used in salads, smoothies, guacamole, and a whole host of other dishes.

2. Sweet Potatoes

Although they’re probably more of an acquired taste than their plainer cousins, sweet potatoes come packed with health benefits. Aside from being a great source of fiber, they are also full of complex carbohydrates and a range of other nutrients. In fact, baking sweet potatoes alter its nutritional structure to produce more vitamin C. When all of this is taken into account, sweet potato fries can prove to be a much healthier alternative to the regular variety.

3. Broccoli

A member of the cabbage family, broccoli can be divisive at times. While some people hate the taste of broccoli, its nutritional value is difficult to debate. It is an excellent source of vitamins A and K and low in fat and carbohydrates. This versatile vegetable can be prepared in any number of ways and is popular in stir-fries, as well as being a staple of Italian cuisine.

4. Blueberries

A popular fruit and perennial favorite of muffin and pancake fans everywhere, blueberries are considered among the healthiest foods on the planet. The fruit contains a substance called Anthocyanin which, along with providing the distinctive blue color, is also responsible for a range of health benefits including healthier bones, lower blood pressure, a healthier heart and an overall chance of living longer. Yes, you read that last bit correctly.

5. Brazil Nuts

This popular health food probably doesn’t need a promotion at this point, having been a stock recommendation in any given nutritional plan for decades. That said, it’s still worth repeating that in addition to the protein, magnesium, and zinc that Brazil nuts provide, they are also a vital source of selenium. Selenium is an important mineral that is crucial to a fully functional immune system because without it the body cannot repair damaged cells and nerves. They are also very good at lowering bad cholesterol and are a great source of ellagic acid, a substance that is hugely beneficial for the brain.

Of course, there are many other changes that can be made to ensure a healthy diet. Including these five items—or any other genuinely nutritious food–in your groceries will have hugely beneficial health effects, and will pay dividends long into the future.
