A new year is around the corner and you want to be ready for a new year of trends but few of us can afford to buy tons of brand new makeup every time we want to try something new. Updating the essentials of your makeup kit will provide you with a great base to experiment as new trends come and go.

1. Sun-kissed blush

The coming year is going to be all about looking like you just got back from a weekend on the Italian coast. Blush is going to be essential to keeping that sunny glow even in the winter months. The best colors to buy will be a few shades redder or pinker than a classic tanned glow.

2. Shimmer and Glow

There are tons of way to give your makeup look that shimmery glow that will be essential in 2019. For skin, there are highlighters, in stick or liquid, or straight up glitter in a bottle like this diamond powder. If you want to go for speed and glimmer every day, try buying a shimmering blush. For eyes, try out Diamond Dew or a similar product. Buy the glitter and then layer it over what you already own for a fresh new look that won’t destroy your budget.

3. Colored and Precision Eyeliner

Colored eyeliner is going to be a big thing in 2019. A natural face with a geometric, colorful cat eye is going to be everywhere over the next few months. The essential component to this look will be a high quality very dark liquid eyeliner so spend your money there then go for a quantity over quality approach with the colors (because you’re going to wanting/needing a lot of different colors.) Apply the colored eyeliner first and then outline with the black so that you’ll get the best of both worlds, bright colors, and crisp lines.

4. Nude Eye Shadows

A staple you probably already have covered but maybe over the last year, neutral toned and nude eyeshadows have really only been seen as a base for the bold, colorful eyeshadows of 2018. But with the color focus shifting to eyeliner, a simple nude eye shadow will be key to creating balance.

5. Eye Crayons With Shine

An addition to the nude eye shadow and geometric eyeliner, a thick eye pencil with a shimmery quality is an easy way to add an extra dimension to your eyes. Apply to the inner corner of the eye, then work outward to make your eyes appear larger and help accentuate dramatic winged eyeliner. This takes considerably less time to apply than eye shadow and doesn’t require getting any brushed dirty.

6. Bold lips With a Twist

If you’ve been following trends at all in the last few years, you probably already have tons of bold lip colors. A useful addition for 2019 will be a nice gloss to apply over the lipsticks you already have. Like the added glitter for eye shadow, this will soften strong colors slightly to add to the “natural” look while also adding the shimmer that is so vital to upcoming looks.
