Top 3 Japanese Games To Watch Out For In 2019

2019 is shaping up to be a blockbuster year for Japanese games. Many new games are coming out this year, among them many old faces but also plenty of newcomers as well.

Japanese games usually use some kind of traditional Japanese settings or use references from popular aspects of Japanese culture, so it’s also a great learning experience for any new to this genre.

Let’s start the adventure with our top 3 Japanese Games to watch out for in 2019

1. Devil May Cry 5

Devil May Cry is a famous series of hack-n-slash action games with extremely over the top actions and special effects.  In this fifth installment of the series, fans will be seeing familiar faces with the return of many major characters from previous games, most notably the protagonists Dante and Nero.

At its core, Devil May Cry 5 is not just about whooping monsters’ asses; you have to do it with style too. The game provides a huge arsenal of weapons and tools across several characters for the player to play with. You can blast open an enemy with a bazooka or send them into the air with a shockwave and decimate them before they reach the floor with swords, nunchucks, staves or even a motorcycle. Yes, you read that right; you can dual-wield motorcycles in this game!

The game is so jam-packed with goodies, fans of action games definitely don’t want to miss this one out.

2. Sekiro: Shadow Die Twice

Departing from their recipe for success – the Souls Series, From Software is going with a historical Japanese setting their next game Sekiro: Shadow Die Twice. The game takes place in Japan during the Sengoku era, a period of turmoil and war with warriors, samurais, and shinobis fighting and killing for glory.

In Sekiro, instead of creating a player character, you will be role-playing as Wolf – the main protagonist who is tasked with fighting his way through swaths of enemies to bring back his young master. There will be no character creation, stat point upgrade or weapon variation in Sekiro unlike in Dark Souls or Bloodborne. Although the developer has turned away from the RPG formula, fans of From Software can rest assured that the infamous game difficulty will still be there.

Hidetaka Miyazaki – the game developer and the man behind From Software success – has given hints that the game is even harder this time. There are now three types of maneuvers that players have to do to avoid damage. The game is strictly single player and without online helpers to assist them, players should expect to struggle endlessly in this new flagship title.

3. Pokémon Sword and Shield

The 8th generation Pokémon games are here and fans around the globe are getting excited. Announced in February 2019, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield will be released later this year on the Nintendo Switch.

This is a major breakthrough for the series and franchise since it’s the first time the games are released on a current console. Previously, all Pokémon games are released on hand-held devices like the Gameboy or The Nintendo DS.

Fans are eagerly waiting for news on new features and graphics upgrades. With the processing power coming from console hardware, many of the limitations that the series saw may finally be lifted.
