Movies will inevitably have plot holes, especially those that belong in the fantasy or science-fiction genre. However, there are some plot holes that are so obvious they really break the immersion of the movie.
People can get upset when a movie doesn’t pay attention to its detail and world-building. And rightfully so.
Today on Topthingy, we will visit the top 5 movie plot holes that can absolutely infuriate you.
1. Plane Fuel in Die Hard 2
In Die Hard 2, you will come across a scene where the plane that can circle Dulles for over an hour somehow doesn’t have enough fuel to reach another airport. Keep in mind that National Airport is just 40 miles away at that point. That’s just silly.
In the states, all aircraft are required by law to carry enough fuel to reach an alternative airport. For such a good movie, this plot hole can really irritate the watchers, especially those who are familiar with aviation procedures.
2. Mike Wazowski and Sully first meeting in Monster Inc.
At the start of the first Monsters Inc. Mike Wazowski said to Sully that “You’ve been jealous of my good looks since the fourth grade”. This line by itself isn’t a plot hole. But you have to keep in mind that there’s the second Monsters Inc.
In the second film, it shows that Mike and Sully actually met each other at college for the first time. The line in the first movie effectively cancels out the second movie. This tiny plot hole invalidates the existence of an entire film.
3. Scientists taking their helmets off during their first encounter with aliens in Prometheus
Imagine being a xeno-biologist who has worked your entire life to learn about biology and the possibility of an alien life form. As a biologist, you have been reminded time and again about the danger of potential chemical contamination coming from these aliens.
But what do you do during your first encounter with one of these aliens? You take your helmet off of course. That’s exactly what the crew did in Prometheus. It doesn’t make any sense, and it makes the premise of the movie feels forced.
4. Time travel in the original Terminator
In the movie, it is stated that only organic matter can travel through time. It made sense when the T-800 was sent buck-naked to the past since it has living tissues surrounding a robotic endoskeleton. But how did the T-1000 managed to time travel too with its mimetic poly-alloy body? They broke their own time travel rules, and that kind of plot hole can really ruin the mood of the movie.
5. The secret assassin business in John Wick series
In the first John Wick movie, it shows watchers a glimpse of what the secret providers can do for those who are in the assassination business. But by the end of John Wick 2, one has to wonder if they are really secretive. The coin value also fluctuates too much. Removing and disposing of dead bodies cost multiple coins, but a single drink in The Continental bar is also 1 coin. One has to wonder how that secret assassin organization manages to stay in business.
